00:00:03.384 --> 00:00:11.215 Hey ladies, welcome to the Single Moms United podcast, where we cannot spell united without you.
00:00:11.215 --> 00:00:17.525 If this is your first time listening, welcome If you are a repeat listener.
00:00:17.525 --> 00:00:19.411 Thank you for your loyalty.
00:00:19.411 --> 00:00:22.384 Today I want to talk about Thanksgiving.
00:00:22.384 --> 00:00:29.074 You know that holiday we celebrate every year the fourth Thursday of November.
00:00:29.074 --> 00:00:36.573 Just as I talked about Halloween, I want to talk a little bit about Thanksgiving and why we celebrate it.
00:00:36.573 --> 00:00:48.262 But first of all, as a Christian, we consider every day a day of Thanksgiving, consider every day a day of thanksgiving.
00:00:48.262 --> 00:00:51.790 When we leave our houses every day, we are so thankful that we're able to come home to a house that's not burned down.
00:00:51.790 --> 00:01:04.283 We didn't have an incident where we were involved in an automobile crash or whether it's public transportation, and there were no incidents there.
00:01:04.283 --> 00:01:15.489 We're just thankful and grateful because God continues to keep us, looks beyond our faults and see our needs, and we're so grateful and thankful for that.
00:01:15.489 --> 00:01:18.870 So, for a Christian, every day is a day of Thanksgiving.
00:01:19.903 --> 00:01:23.620 I didn't understand the real meaning of Thanksgiving.
00:01:23.620 --> 00:01:27.980 I just knew that there was going to be some good food.
00:01:27.980 --> 00:01:52.912 I knew there was going to be a big family gathering Just save your appetite right, because everything was just going to be so good, and I remember us all going to my aunt's house and my cousins and my aunts and uncles, and everybody was there and we're just coming together and just enjoying good food.
00:01:52.912 --> 00:01:58.453 But did we really understand the reason for Thanksgiving?
00:01:58.453 --> 00:02:20.508 And I'm going to be very candid Nope, had no idea, just knew was going to get some good food, spend time with my cousins that I hadn't seen for the last 12 months, and everybody just come together, laugh and have a good time and get full and eat some great desserts.
00:02:20.508 --> 00:02:21.530 Oh my gosh.
00:02:21.530 --> 00:02:25.435 And you talk about fantastic home cooked meals.
00:02:25.435 --> 00:02:30.231 Nothing was store bought, nothing came out of a can.
00:02:30.231 --> 00:02:35.231 I mean, it was just awesome, absolutely awesome.
00:02:35.759 --> 00:02:36.782 And so how?
00:02:36.782 --> 00:02:40.061 Why would you think about anything else, right?
00:02:40.061 --> 00:02:48.106 When you're getting all this great food and this great camaraderie with your family, what would you think about?
00:02:48.106 --> 00:02:48.661 Like?
00:02:48.661 --> 00:02:51.629 So what's the real reason for Thanksgiving, right?
00:02:51.629 --> 00:02:53.663 And I have a feeling.
00:02:53.663 --> 00:03:03.561 I have a feeling that your children may have the same mindset that I had, well, in my younger years.
00:03:03.561 --> 00:03:04.382 How about that?
00:03:05.282 --> 00:03:10.165 Because guess what, single mom, I didn't explain Thanksgiving to my kids either.
00:03:10.165 --> 00:03:13.307 Thanksgiving was never really explained to me.
00:03:13.307 --> 00:03:25.877 I heard something about the pilgrims and the Indians or something to that effect when I was in school communication within the family, or my own family, of what it is and why we celebrate it.
00:03:25.877 --> 00:03:34.181 Yeah, it didn't happen.
00:03:34.181 --> 00:03:38.235 So I always grew up with, okay, well, thanksgiving is about good food and just spending time with family, and that's a great concept.
00:03:38.235 --> 00:03:39.439 That's a great concept.
00:03:39.439 --> 00:03:42.447 But then why do we only do it once a year?
00:03:42.447 --> 00:03:46.182 Think about that Again, ladies.
00:03:46.883 --> 00:03:54.210 As a single mom, we have to take ownership and I've said this many, many times before.
00:03:54.210 --> 00:04:09.384 We have to take ownership in teaching our children why we do what we do, because otherwise we're just going to keep going in this cycle, not understanding, you know.
00:04:09.384 --> 00:04:16.490 Because, again, my question is why do we have to wait till the fourth Thursday in November to be thankful?
00:04:16.490 --> 00:04:21.362 Why do we have to, you know, wait that long to spend time with family?
00:04:21.362 --> 00:04:26.913 Why do we have to wait that long to have this good food fixed?
00:04:26.913 --> 00:04:34.930 You know, using a can or processed food, we get real macaroni and cheese, right.
00:04:34.930 --> 00:04:39.680 So why do we have to wait to celebrate being thankful?
00:04:39.680 --> 00:04:48.754 And so, again, ladies, it's not up to the school to educate your child regarding holidays and festivities.
00:04:48.754 --> 00:04:51.625 This is on you, this is on us.
00:04:51.625 --> 00:04:56.952 I decided to do my own little research around Thanksgiving.
00:04:56.952 --> 00:05:00.262 I'm going to share it with you Again.
00:05:00.262 --> 00:05:02.488 I encourage you to do the same.
00:05:02.488 --> 00:05:19.807 It's up to us to educate our children so they have a clear understanding of why they're out of school, why we're getting together and celebrating a great day, which it is what I found.
00:05:20.189 --> 00:05:33.012 Thanksgiving was established in 1621 by the English pilgrims who were celebrating their first successful harvest.
00:05:33.012 --> 00:05:35.956 Hmm, 1621.
00:05:35.956 --> 00:05:40.348 Wow, that's a long time ago even for me.
00:05:40.348 --> 00:05:45.204 So if you have a young child, they're going to be like 1621.
00:05:45.204 --> 00:05:45.925 What is that?
00:05:45.925 --> 00:05:54.298 Yeah, it's an actual year, but anyway, that's how far back it goes.
00:05:54.298 --> 00:06:00.834 They held the occasion to thank God for the great harvest in the preceding year.
00:06:00.834 --> 00:06:10.372 Abraham Lincoln, who was the 16th president, declared the event a national holiday in America.
00:06:10.372 --> 00:06:21.637 So in 1863, during the American Civil War, he declared that the fourth Thursday in November should be set apart to give thanks to God.
00:06:21.637 --> 00:06:26.608 November should be set apart to give thanks to God.
00:06:26.608 --> 00:06:29.416 Americans observe Thanksgiving to celebrate good health, blessings in their family and prosperity.
00:06:29.416 --> 00:06:37.434 So on this day, families come together and prepare different meals, with turkey meat being a major part of the meal.
00:06:37.434 --> 00:06:50.353 So again, my question is I get that they got the first successful harvest and that's fantastic, where they were able to eat, and eat heartily, right.
00:06:50.975 --> 00:06:53.338 However, it shouldn't stop there.
00:06:53.338 --> 00:07:00.017 It shouldn't stop there, and that's the part where we really need to educate our children on.
00:07:00.017 --> 00:07:12.279 To educate our children on yes, we designate it one day out of the year, out of 365 days, to celebrate being thankful and grateful and so forth.
00:07:12.279 --> 00:07:15.869 And now today's generation they don't know anything about a harvest.
00:07:15.869 --> 00:07:20.358 Okay, so that's how antiquated this is.
00:07:20.358 --> 00:07:22.028 They're not going to know that.
00:07:22.028 --> 00:07:30.276 We're in an age of we talk to things and they talk back to us, right, so they are not going to understand.
00:07:30.276 --> 00:07:31.257 Well, what do you mean?
00:07:31.257 --> 00:07:32.745 Successful harvest?
00:07:32.745 --> 00:07:40.995 Is it your job to go back and tell them about this great harvest back in, or 1621?
00:07:40.995 --> 00:07:43.716 Nah, nah.
00:07:44.077 --> 00:07:48.562 But what you can do, ladies, is start off now by saying you know what?
00:07:48.562 --> 00:07:50.067 Be thankful.
00:07:50.067 --> 00:08:02.959 Be grateful you have a roof over your head, you have clothes, you have family, you're able to interact with people, you're not sick, I'm not sick, we're functioning.
00:08:02.959 --> 00:08:06.225 We may not be rich, but we're getting by.
00:08:06.225 --> 00:08:17.490 These are the things that you want to share with your children, because this is what Thanksgiving is all about, and it's not just one day.
00:08:17.490 --> 00:08:29.430 It's not just one day, and I think that's really what I want to drill home here, and you don't even have to be a Christian to acknowledge that every day is a day of Thanksgiving.
00:08:30.732 --> 00:08:39.238 In this world today, if we're able to go various places without incidents, we need to just be thankful.
00:08:39.238 --> 00:08:42.640 If we have food, we need to be thankful.
00:08:42.640 --> 00:08:44.802 Clothes, we need to be thankful.
00:08:44.802 --> 00:08:46.644 If we have food, we need to be thankful.
00:08:46.644 --> 00:08:48.024 Clothes, we need to be thankful.
00:08:48.024 --> 00:08:55.214 We don't have to think back to 1621 of the first successful harvest.
00:08:55.214 --> 00:08:56.437 Now you can share with your children.
00:08:56.456 --> 00:08:57.078 This is how it came about.
00:08:57.078 --> 00:08:58.582 But now we are in a different era, right?
00:08:58.582 --> 00:09:00.427 We're in a different generation.
00:09:00.427 --> 00:09:03.072 So we don't stop there.
00:09:03.072 --> 00:09:08.750 We say this is why it came about, but this is what we're doing to continue it.
00:09:08.750 --> 00:09:15.951 And to continue it means we have to acknowledge we are thankful for everything that we have.
00:09:15.951 --> 00:09:20.465 It may not be the best car, but we're thankful for it.
00:09:20.465 --> 00:09:23.998 It may not be the best clothes, but be thankful for it, and that's where we're thankful for it.
00:09:23.998 --> 00:09:26.525 May not be the best clothes, but be thankful for it, and that's where we're at.
00:09:27.408 --> 00:09:33.057 And so, yes, we celebrate it the fourth thursday of every year in november.
00:09:33.057 --> 00:09:46.015 We can do that every day, so this allows the family to come together, enjoy one another, because, unfortunately, family dynamics seems to be disappearing.
00:09:46.015 --> 00:09:53.674 Unfortunately, it just seems to be disappearing, and as a single mom, it starts right there.
00:09:53.674 --> 00:09:59.658 Right, because now the father isn't in the picture like he should be.
00:09:59.658 --> 00:10:10.014 And so back in the day, when we talked about family dynamics, you had a two-parent household, and now you're just you trying to do it on your own.
00:10:10.014 --> 00:10:42.975 So those dynamics have changed, and so one of the things that was just extremely exciting for me is because it was a family, it was a unit, and now that that's changing, you know, our approach has to change a little different as well, and so that's why we have to teach our children or you have to teach your children that every day is a day of Thanksgiving, and not just, you know, the fourth Thursday of the year, but that still falls on you, single mom.
00:10:44.447 --> 00:10:46.013 Now here's another fun fact.
00:10:46.013 --> 00:10:50.076 So why do we eat turkey on Thanksgiving?
00:10:50.076 --> 00:11:00.107 Okay, they sell turkey throughout the year, so why do we just people eat it, or get the big bird, I should say for just Thanksgiving?
00:11:00.107 --> 00:11:22.068 So looks like, based on what I researched according to Thomas D Baco on what I researched, according to Thomas D Baco, this was because a group of poultry producers launched a marketing campaign during the post-Civil War years to eat more turkey, and especially around Thanksgiving.
00:11:22.068 --> 00:11:24.813 Now, how true that is, I don't know.
00:11:24.813 --> 00:11:27.678 You might want to continue to do your research.
00:11:27.678 --> 00:11:30.787 Kind of makes sense Even back then.
00:11:30.787 --> 00:11:46.951 Right, you have folks that's producing and trying to make that money and so therefore they're going to push it and they pushed it in a specific time and especially aligning it with the holiday, and that makes sense to me.
00:11:47.426 --> 00:11:49.885 Again, I'm not sure that's factual or not.
00:11:49.885 --> 00:11:53.113 Turkey is sold throughout the year.
00:11:53.113 --> 00:12:05.033 Matter of fact, I get smoked turkey legs or, um, regular turkey legs all the time and may cook it for Sunday dinner and with some sides and so forth.
00:12:05.033 --> 00:12:12.642 So I'm not waiting until the fourth Thursday of November to have turkey.
00:12:12.642 --> 00:12:14.431 I just don't wait.
00:12:15.004 --> 00:12:16.447 Back to my childhood.
00:12:16.447 --> 00:12:23.000 I don't remember my mom cooking turkey any other time of the year.
00:12:23.000 --> 00:12:25.472 I don't remember her ever doing that.
00:12:25.472 --> 00:12:28.914 So it was more for a special occasion as well.
00:12:28.914 --> 00:12:31.248 Ladies, there you have it.
00:12:31.248 --> 00:12:44.773 So something that was established seems like ancient history and we're still going along with it, and I think we still should.
00:12:45.033 --> 00:12:52.490 Right, but I think we also should educate our children why we are celebrating Thanksgiving.
00:12:52.490 --> 00:12:53.772 What's the purpose?
00:12:53.772 --> 00:13:06.551 And then, after you educate them of how it originated, now you put the comma behind that and say every day is a day of Thanksgiving, every day is a day of being thankful.
00:13:06.551 --> 00:13:14.576 Teach your children how to thank you, single mom, because you are out there trying to do it on your own.
00:13:14.576 --> 00:13:18.570 My kids used to say thanks, mom, and I tell you what.
00:13:18.570 --> 00:13:21.917 That is the greatest feeling ever.
00:13:21.917 --> 00:13:23.586 You should teach your children.
00:13:23.586 --> 00:13:26.572 Things aren't being dropped into the house.
00:13:26.572 --> 00:13:32.427 You're having to get out there and make things happen.
00:13:32.427 --> 00:13:35.754 There's a lot of sacrifices that come with that.
00:13:35.754 --> 00:13:40.671 Yes, they didn't ask to be here, but by golly they are here.
00:13:40.671 --> 00:13:48.212 They should understand what some things take to run your household and for that they should be grateful.
00:13:48.774 --> 00:13:59.388 All right, ladies, I hope you enjoyed today's episode of Thanksgiving and I hope you have a fantastic holiday and don't eat too much.
00:13:59.388 --> 00:14:01.610 I'm not gonna lie.
00:14:01.610 --> 00:14:03.812 I'm gonna tear some stuff up.
00:14:03.812 --> 00:14:05.936 Gonna tear some stuff up.
00:14:05.936 --> 00:14:06.697 I'm ready.
00:14:06.697 --> 00:14:09.360 I'm ready for a good home-cooked meal.
00:14:09.360 --> 00:14:18.005 All right, ladies, you take care.
00:14:18.005 --> 00:14:19.894 Have a fabulous day, have a fabulous week, embrace your children and tell them you love them.
