00:00:03.406 --> 00:00:15.830
Hey ladies, welcome to the Single Moms United podcast, where it's not about how you arrived at the single mom title, but what you do with it.

00:00:15.830 --> 00:00:21.603
Hey, if this is your first time joining, welcome If you are a repeat listener.

00:00:21.603 --> 00:00:23.486
Thank you for your loyalty.

00:00:23.486 --> 00:00:55.871
All right, so I'm not going to spend a lot of time on what our topic is today, so I'm just going to jump right in, okay, and extracting words from the letter I and applying it to your parenting skills, and so, if you've been following me these past few weeks, you'll notice I pull several different words from the letter I in hopes that it will help you or at least give you something to think about, because that's what this podcast is all about.

00:00:55.871 --> 00:00:58.408
It's about critical thinking.

00:00:58.408 --> 00:01:42.653
It's not a one size fits all, because everybody has different or unique perspectives on life and how they navigate through life, but this is something to think about that can apply to your parenting skills, and I'm going to say it in my out loud voice yes, I wish I had somebody like me Well, and I kind of did, I kind of did, so let me not do that but someone that can provide guidance or at least make me think I did have my mom and my kid's grandmother and some other folks that helped me along the way as it relates to my parenting.

00:01:42.653 --> 00:01:58.188
So I'm so ever grateful for those folks that poured into my life to help me out, because I was young, I didn't know any better and so I was doing a lot of feeling around in the dark as it relates to parenting.

00:01:58.188 --> 00:02:02.230
Again, that's what this podcast is designed to do.

00:02:02.230 --> 00:02:22.824
If you are kind of feeling around in the dark when it comes to some things, hopefully by this episode or listening to other episodes, you feel encouraged and say, yeah, that's something to think about, right, because at the end of this podcast, that's what you should be saying.

00:02:22.824 --> 00:02:28.623
Or you should be left with thinking that, oh, I didn't even think of it that way.

00:02:28.623 --> 00:02:32.992
Let me take another look, or let me reassess that.

00:02:32.992 --> 00:02:37.924
Let me see if that can't be applied to my own parenting skills.

00:02:37.924 --> 00:02:40.667
All right, ladies, so here we go.

00:02:40.667 --> 00:02:41.587
So here we go.

00:02:41.608 --> 00:02:50.657
Today's word is intelligence or intelligent, whichever form you prefer to use.

00:02:50.657 --> 00:03:00.633
Unfortunately, I'm not always grammatically correct and as I present something, so hopefully you won't hold that against me.

00:03:00.633 --> 00:03:07.961
Thank you, appreciate you, but I'm talking about intelligence and you know me personally.

00:03:07.961 --> 00:03:22.550
I was always somewhat intimidated when I hear the word intelligent, right, because that means you're super smart, right, you know more than the average person.

00:03:22.550 --> 00:03:35.969
So I was often intimidated by that because I just felt like I didn't know a lot and, as a result of me not knowing a lot, I couldn't teach my children or my kids about some of the basics of life.

00:03:36.251 --> 00:03:43.145
Here's the good news when we talk about intelligence, or intelligence, it's just knowledge.

00:03:43.145 --> 00:03:45.050
How do you get knowledge?

00:03:45.050 --> 00:03:47.014
It's from learning.

00:03:47.014 --> 00:03:49.481
How do you learn?

00:03:49.481 --> 00:04:01.506
Either book smart or street smart, I think, is the term, or common sense, whatever term you choose, it's all about knowledge.

00:04:01.506 --> 00:04:04.431
And again, how do we get knowledge?

00:04:04.431 --> 00:04:06.974
We get knowledge through learning.

00:04:06.974 --> 00:04:16.392
So, guess what, ladies, you're intelligent, because if you learn some things along life's journey, like I have, guess what?

00:04:16.392 --> 00:04:20.315
We have moved over into the intelligent world.

00:04:20.315 --> 00:04:44.053
Yeah, and I don't know if I would say super smart, but I just experienced a lot throughout my life that now I feel comfortable in sharing, like through this podcast, when we think about knowledge and learning as a single mom or as a mom period.

00:04:44.053 --> 00:04:56.345
So if there's moms just listening to this podcast, or irregardless of your status, we have to be in position to teach our children.

00:04:56.846 --> 00:05:00.312
I was talking to a friend of mine earlier today.

00:05:00.312 --> 00:05:10.737
One of the things I expressed to her as I was raising my kids that I regret is not really educating them.

00:05:10.737 --> 00:05:18.774
I was relying on other schools, my church and other organizations to teach my kids.

00:05:18.774 --> 00:05:27.651
If you've heard any of my prior episodes, I break down what a good mom is and what a bad mom is, or a parent.

00:05:27.651 --> 00:05:34.947
Either way, right, if a fellow is listening, a good mom teaches and a bad mom doesn't.

00:05:34.947 --> 00:05:37.211
It's just that simple.

00:05:37.211 --> 00:05:39.154
There is no perfect mom.

00:05:39.154 --> 00:05:55.574
We're not going to get it right all the time, we are not going to make the right decision every time, but as a parent a good parent we should be teaching our children.

00:05:55.574 --> 00:06:02.333
We shouldn't rely on the schools and other organizations to do this for us.

00:06:02.333 --> 00:06:14.245
We birthed these kids, we carried them for nine months and sometimes a little longer on our hip right, but we did that.

00:06:14.245 --> 00:06:15.305
We did that.

00:06:15.305 --> 00:06:23.536
So why would we put the onus of teaching our children with someone else that don't even know them?

00:06:23.536 --> 00:06:25.505
Think about that, mom.

00:06:26.379 --> 00:06:29.427
And one of my episodes I talked about.

00:06:29.427 --> 00:06:35.009
You know where I saw on social media where they said things the school should be teaching.

00:06:35.009 --> 00:06:40.721
I said in my out loud voice no, that is not the school's responsibility.

00:06:40.721 --> 00:06:44.992
It's the responsibility to teach our kids about money and how to manage money.

00:06:44.992 --> 00:06:47.223
That's our responsibility.

00:06:47.223 --> 00:06:55.947
Now, if you say, well, you know what and I'm just going to speak for myself in my out loud voice I'm not good at managing money.

00:06:55.947 --> 00:06:58.853
At least I wasn't when I was raising my kids.

00:06:58.853 --> 00:06:59.821
I was horrible.

00:06:59.821 --> 00:07:02.086
Number one, I wasn't taught.

00:07:02.086 --> 00:07:04.810
And then, number two, I didn't try to learn.

00:07:04.810 --> 00:07:06.521
Absorb that, ladies.

00:07:07.124 --> 00:07:13.822
Just because we aren't taught something doesn't mean that we don't take that ownership and go learn it.

00:07:13.822 --> 00:07:17.348
You know, I use this podcast as an example.

00:07:17.348 --> 00:07:22.021
I didn't know anything about podcasting, I had no idea.

00:07:22.021 --> 00:07:33.886
But I went and learned how to do it, what systems I need, what microphones and all of that that I need to produce a podcast.

00:07:33.886 --> 00:07:44.365
And here we are today, two years later, I'm doing a podcast with over 7,000 downloads and I'm like whoa wait, what just happened?

00:07:44.365 --> 00:07:52.403
But if I would have waited for someone to come and teach me, I would have never learned.

00:07:52.944 --> 00:08:20.971
So, ladies, today's takeaway is just because you weren't taught doesn't mean you don't go out and try to learn, because now it's your responsibility to educate your children, because now you know if they get it or they don't get it when in a school, you know they'd say this is the curriculum that was taught, but you don't know if they really get it or not, unless you look at the grades.

00:08:20.971 --> 00:08:25.591
But then you still don't know what they're struggling with.

00:08:25.591 --> 00:08:36.711
When you're the teacher, you get that opportunity to uncover what they're not getting, and that's the important piece to this process.

00:08:36.711 --> 00:08:50.227
Ladies, now, as a mom, as a good mom, as you're paying it forward to your child or your children, you can start out with basic stuff, with teaching them, okay.

00:08:50.227 --> 00:08:52.351
So here's today's takeaway.

00:08:52.351 --> 00:09:00.442
As far as something basic you can teach your child, I always like to give you a little push in the right direction.

00:09:00.442 --> 00:09:05.288
If you say you know what, I don't know, I'm not sure where to go with this.

00:09:05.288 --> 00:09:08.371
Well, here's a hint and I challenge you.

00:09:08.371 --> 00:09:12.831
Okay, if your child isn't already doing this.

00:09:12.831 --> 00:09:19.251
But here's today's challenge Teach your kids how to say thank you.

00:09:19.272 --> 00:09:19.835
That's very basic.

00:09:19.835 --> 00:09:20.837
Well, when should they say thank you?

00:09:20.837 --> 00:09:21.220
That's very basic.

00:09:21.220 --> 00:09:23.807
Well, when should they say thank you?

00:09:23.807 --> 00:09:25.807
When they're given something?

00:09:25.807 --> 00:09:28.708
Okay, and it's two words thank you.

00:09:28.708 --> 00:09:35.726
If your child isn't doing that, and if they are kudos, mom, you eight steps ahead.

00:09:35.726 --> 00:09:39.710
But if they are not moms, I challenge you.

00:09:39.710 --> 00:09:53.187
Teach your child to say thank you when someone gives them something and guess what and it's just not somebody outside of your circle Teach them how to thank you.

00:09:53.187 --> 00:09:58.289
It goes a long way and I said it before in one of my prior episodes.

00:09:58.559 --> 00:10:12.073
My stepfather, when I was raising my kids, he taught my kids how to tell me thank you and I'm so appreciative of that because it was survival mode for me.

00:10:12.073 --> 00:10:15.706
As I mentioned before, finances were just.

00:10:15.706 --> 00:10:18.188
It was a huge struggle.

00:10:18.188 --> 00:10:22.054
I didn't know how I was going to make it from day to day.

00:10:22.054 --> 00:10:25.649
My check was already spent before I got it.

00:10:25.649 --> 00:10:54.931
Again, when my kids come back and I got a little something extra for them, or they ask for something from the store this and that and I get it for them and they say thank you, wow, wow is all I can say, cause you don't know that feeling when you're struggling and you're out trying to survive, trying to do the best that you can, knowing that they're not taking it for granted.

00:10:54.931 --> 00:11:15.931
So that's one thing I definitely cherish with my stepfather and may he rest in peace, because he did try to teach my kids some of those fundamental things in life that they should do, and guess what, when they started thanking me, guess what?

00:11:15.931 --> 00:11:18.589
They automatically started thanking others.

00:11:18.589 --> 00:11:24.052
It became a natural response when someone gave them something.

00:11:24.659 --> 00:11:28.027
So, moms, again, that's very basic.

00:11:28.027 --> 00:11:32.802
You can take it up a notch because, again, this is all about critical thinking.

00:11:32.802 --> 00:11:34.767
You can take it up a notch.

00:11:34.767 --> 00:11:36.730
What are you teaching your child?

00:11:36.730 --> 00:11:39.344
What are you going to take ownership of?

00:11:39.344 --> 00:11:43.952
Now, I just gave you a simple task to teach your child.

00:11:43.952 --> 00:11:56.288
But if your child is already there, so they're set up for something greater as it relates to knowledge and intelligence, and it starts with you.

00:11:56.288 --> 00:12:01.345
Mom, yep, I'm pointing at you, you see my finger, I'm pointing at you.

00:12:01.345 --> 00:12:04.711
Love you, ladies.

00:12:05.352 --> 00:12:15.212
All right, if you enjoyed this episode, tell another single mom this podcast.

00:12:15.212 --> 00:12:17.875
It states single moms united.

00:12:17.875 --> 00:12:22.750
But what it means is we are encouraging one another.

00:12:22.750 --> 00:12:29.596
So when you see that united, that's how you translate that word encouraging one another.

00:12:29.596 --> 00:12:37.833
So I'm encouraging you through this podcast, but if you know another single mom, then talk on it, encourage them.

00:12:37.833 --> 00:12:48.581
Girl, you're going to get through this Because a lot of people look at my podcast or the title of it as being, you know, setting up some kind of coup or something like that.

00:12:48.581 --> 00:12:52.066
But no, it's all about encouragement.

00:12:52.066 --> 00:12:54.791
Again, tell another single mom.

00:12:54.791 --> 00:12:57.760
I hope you enjoyed this episode.

00:12:57.760 --> 00:13:00.166
If you did, let me know.

00:13:00.166 --> 00:13:01.268
Let me know.

00:13:01.268 --> 00:13:11.573
You can visit my YouTube page or you can go to singlemomsunitedpodcastcom and leave me some feedback there.

00:13:11.573 --> 00:13:13.868
I would love to hear from you.

00:13:13.868 --> 00:13:15.774
Take care, ladies.
